The science

Measured, not claimed.

Every number on this page comes from a test we can show you. Here is what we measured on a child's pillow, how, and with whom.

A children's pillow does not need a clinical trial. It needs to be measured properly, at the heights children actually sleep at, and the measurements shown. That is what we did here.

What the pressure map shows

A sensor mat under the neck records where the weight lands. Red is high pressure, blue is low. Same child, same night, two pillows.

Peak pressure under the neck

-38%versus a flat pillow

Peak pressure drops from 42 mmHg to 26 mmHg, and the contact surface widens by 31%. The load spreads across the whole cradle instead of concentrating on one point behind the ear.

Lower peak pressure means fewer little wake-ups in the night. That is the whole point of a shaped pillow.Hannah Whitcombe

Neck angle on the side

4°off the spine line, against 14 degrees flat

Measured from photographs taken at the same height, at each of the three pillow heights. A child's shoulder needs room, and the cradle gives it without letting the head drop.

Under five degrees is what we look for. Above ten, a small neck is working all night.Hannah Whitcombe

Height kept after 30,000 compressions

97%ISO 3385 fatigue test

Thirty thousand compressions is roughly two years of nightly use. The pillow came back to 97% of its original height, which is what keeps a child at the same level from one year to the next.

This is the number that separates a pillow you keep from one you replace every winter.Hannah Whitcombe

What parents report after 30 nights

Parents asked 30 days after delivery, one question at a time. Sample to be updated as orders come in.

Two numbers nobody explains

Height 2 to 9 cm

Height says how far the head is lifted. Too little and the head drops towards the mattress, too much and the chin comes down and the mouth falls open. That is why there are three of them, one per age band, and not one for everybody.

Recovery 97%

Recovery says how much height comes back after the pillow has been slept on. A soft square loses a third of its height in a couple of months. Ours came back to 97% after the equivalent of two years.

The full spec, nothing hidden

  • The three sizes
    • 1 to 3 years: height 2 to 4 cm
    • 3 to 8 years: height 4 to 6 cm
    • 8 to 14 years: height 6 to 9 cm
    • Each height has its own footprint, sized to a smaller head and shoulder than the one after it
    • Exact lengths, widths and weights to be confirmed with the supplier before publication
  • The core
    • Hollow TPE tubes with a wadding fill, airy and springy
    • Shaped to hold the head and the neck at the same level, and to come back to that level after every night
    • Open structure, so the air moves through instead of sitting against the cheek
    • Chemical safety tested, no harmful substances, certificate to attach
  • The cover
    • Soft knitted cover, kind against a child's cheek
    • Full-length zip, comes off in one pull
    • Machine washable at 30 degrees, air-dry, no tumble dryer and no iron
    • OEKO-TEX Standard 100, certificate to attach
  • Care and lifespan

Air it out of the box before the first night. Wash the cover every two to three weeks, more often at the younger ages. Never wash the core, air it instead.

It is made to hold its height through the years your child is in that size band. Two year guarantee on loss of height.

  • How it was tested

Pressure mapping on 24 children aged 1 to 14 over 30 nights, three sleeping positions, at each of the three heights, in an independent laboratory. Fatigue testing to ISO 3385. Safety tested against the European standards for children's products: materials and shape, fire resistance and chemical safety, with CE marking.

Full report available on request once the certificates are attached.

What we leave out

Four things the cheap end of the shelf uses on a children's pillow, and we do not.

  • A grown-up pillow cut down

An adult shape made smaller is not a child's shape. The neck is shorter and the shoulder is narrower, and the height has to follow both.

  • Halogenated flame retardants

Still common in imported filling. Ours meets the European fire requirement without them.

  • Solvent-based glue

The source of the chemical smell that never quite leaves, right under a child's face all night. We use none.

  • Pure polyester covers

Cheap, and they trap heat against a child's cheek. Ours is knitted to breathe.

Safety and OEKO-TEX certificates to be attached once received from the supplier.
